The Pieces

Discover the unique roles and movements of each chess piece

Chess King

King

The most important piece on the board. The King can move one square in any direction. Losing your King means losing the game. The King must be protected at all costs and can participate in castling.

Chess Queen

Queen

The most powerful piece, combining the movement of a Rook and Bishop. She controls large areas and is often decisive in attacks.

Chess Rook

Rook

Moves any number of squares horizontally or vertically. Rooks are especially strong in the endgame and on open files.

Chess Bishop

Bishop

Moves diagonally across the board. Each bishop is confined to one color and excels on open diagonals.

Chess Knight

Knight

Moves in an “L” shape and is the only piece that can jump over others. It’s ideal for complex positions.

Chess Pawn

Pawn

Moves forward one square (or two from the starting rank), captures diagonally, and can promote upon reaching the last rank. Pawns are essential to structure and strategy.
